What is the Brownfield? Brownfield land (or simply a brownfield) is land previously used for industrial purposes or certain commercial uses. The land may be contaminated by low concentrations of hazardous waste or pollution, and has the potential to be reused once it is cleaned up.

ˇ°Public Place has lain vacant for far too long and its cleanup and redevelopment will remove an eyesore from this neighborhood. Now, not only will this development provide dynamic new community resources, it will do so in a way that sets a precedent for future developments by integrating sustainable design features with affordability.ˇ± - Shaun Donovan, The United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

Every modern city has an amazing amount of vacant, unused land in its downtown core- hundreds of acres in most major cities. What is known about the site? What are the special needs and concerns of the community for the site? If the site should be considered for clean-up, what is the practical redevelopment or reuse alternative? How can robotic and sensing technology helps the neighborhoods to clean-up and resue the site to create positive impacts on the community?

The Brownfield Remidication Robot project aims at developing a series of robotic and sensing solutions that would enable city-dwellers to create an multi-use urban space that can transform abandoned spaces into beautiful and functional focal points.

This research is a part of speculative public design workshop to investigate how robotic and sensing technologies affect public life in the city, and how we might critically and creatively interpret and internene in the design and development process. The public design workshop project is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. More information on the City as Learning Lab.
